Backgrounder

Wind energy is really just another form of solar energy. Sunlight falling on oceans and continents causes air to warm and rise, which in turn generates surface winds. The wind has been used by humans for thousands of years, first to carry ships across oceans and, later, to pump water and grind grain. More recently, wind has been harnessed as a clean, safe source of electricity around the world. more....

Build Your Own

These plans are for the construction of vertical axis wind turbine, modelled after a design invented by the Finnish engineer S.J. Savonius in 1922. The Savonius rotor uses drag — not lift — to capture energy for making electricity. It isn't as efficient as a conventional horizontal axis turbine, but is much easier to build. more....
