A Model Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
This model is moderately difficult to build, requiring the use of equipment like a digital voltmeter, and the purchase of hard-to-find materials such as enamelled magnet wire, and rare earth magnets. We suggest parent supervision
for children under 14 years of age.
With careful construction, this model is capable of producing up to 4 volts of alternating current, enough to light small flashlight bulbs and light emitting diodes. It makes an excellent demonstration of both the capture of wind energy, and the production of electricity, and can easily be modified
for higher electricity output. Details on the tools and materials used to build this model appear in the construction plans.
These plans were developed with support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
